Consumer price inflation has been below 4 per cent since PM Modi's November 8 decision to abolish 500- and 1,000- rupee notes wiped out 86 per cent of the currency in circulation, hurting demand in largely cash-based economy. China's imports of copper were also down 22 percent from December to 380,000 tonnes in January, data from the General Administration of Customs showed. Global benchmark Brent crude contracts for April delivery were up 1.8% to $56.63 a barrel Friday morning, while USA benchmark West Texas Intermediate light sweet crude was up 1.8% to $53.96. Jeroen Dijsselbloem, head of the Eurogroup finance ministers, blasted the fund for being "overly pessimistic" after it said Greece's hefty debt load is unsustainable. Its Eurozone creditors have forced it to make painful budget cuts that caused a deep recession. WRAL is reporting that a state of an emergency has been declared for the Town of Chapel Hill due to the water shortage for Orange Water and Sewer Authority (OWASA) customers. An incident at the Jones Ferry Road Water Treatment Plant resulted in an accidental overflow of fluoride during the water treatment process. "We are investigating the fluoride overfeed and water line break, and will report to the OWASA Board of Directors and the community at a later date", OWASA said in the statement. (more...)

In its statement, the Fed said flatly that inflation "will rise to 2 per cent over the medium term".
