37 killed in twin attacks in southern Iraq

Health officials confirmed at least 50 people were killed in Southern Iraq on Thursday as a result of two separate attacks.

The death toll had risen to 50 people, with more than 80 wounded, a health official and police sources said. "One attacker blew up his suicide vest inside the crowded restaurant while a group of other gunmen started to throw grenades and fire at diners", said police colonel Ali Abdul Hussain.

Security sources said the attackers were disguised as members of the Hashed Al Shaabi, a mainly Shiite paramilitary alliance which has fought alongside the army and police against Daesh in northern Iraq. The road targeted by jihadists is in southern Iraqi province Dhi Qar, heavily populated by Shi'ite Muslims.
