Necker Island

"People don't realise that these are British people, these are British islanders and we have a duty to them".

"This is not St. John anymore. And we don't know what to do", she wrote on a blog she maintains about island life.

SIR RICHARD Branson has revealed the extent of the devastation on his Caribbean island as Hurricane Irma continued to batter Florida with 100mph winds and torrential rain.

An elderly woman from Saint Martin rests in a shelter after being evacuated to Guadeloupe, the French Caribbean island, in Pointe-a-Pitre on September 10, 2017, after Hurricane Irma passed.

The UK Government itemised the assistance rendered to its territories.

British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson defended his government's response to what he called an "unprecedented catastrophe" and promised to increase funding for the relief effort.

Britain has also dispatched 10 humanitarian flights and pledged £32 million (35 million euros, $42 million) in aid for the territories, which are under British sovereignty but not part of the United Kingdom. The government will soon add to its initial $42 million earmark, he said.

Scott Baker, whose daughter Amy Brown is stranded in St Martin, an island that comprises of the French territory of Saint-Martin and the Dutch section of Sint-Maarten, said he felt "totally abandoned" by the United Kingdom government.

'Fake information' creating problems in Myanmar's Rohingya crisis, says Suu Kyi
The prime minister's visit to Myanmar comes amid a spike in ethnic violence with Rohingya Muslims in the Rakhine state . Union minister Kiren Rijiju on Tuesday said Rohingyas are illegal immigrants and will be deported.

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) said there are just under 500 troops now in the region, made up of marines, engineers, medics and specialists, including Army and RAF personnel.

But his son Sam has posted an update, saying that Hurricane Irma has decimated buildings on the island. "There was looting and locals were getting violent because of a shortage of supplies". Homes can be rebuilt but lives can't.

Dutch King Willem-Alexander flew to St. Martin on Monday to witness the flattened structures firsthand.

First landing in Barbuda last Tuesday, Hurricane Irma has proven catastrophic to infrastructure as it passed through the Caribbean into Florida, according to TIME magazine.

Asked why the United Kingdom had not airlifted its citizens out of the area before the hurricane struck, the Prime Minister's official spokesman said: "We are talking about a huge number of British citizens who are in the path of this hurricane, and we are doing everything we can to help them".

His video showed trees ripped from the ground and buildings destroyed, along with a TV hanging from the wall.

The release also said that the insurance companies have agreed to have a unified process for filing claims.
