Endless War Continues as Senate Kills Effort to Repeal 2001 Authorization

Republican Senate leadership unable to scuttle debate on U.S. wars

A spokesman for Senate Majority Mitch McConnell did not respond to confirm Paul's statement, but three Senate aides said a vote was likely on Paul's amendment.

Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) (C) returns to his office after bringing the Senate into session at the Capitol July 31, 2017 in Washington, DC.

"For the first time in 15 years, we are debating the congressional role in the declaration of war". "Senator Paul's amendment, had it been approved, would have provided the much-needed push for Congress to uphold its constitutional duty to authorize war, and to limit the use of extraordinary wartime powers to kill and detain". Rand Paul (R-KY) that would have repealed the 2001 Authorized Use of Military Force (AUMF) 61 to 31.

The vote on tabling the amendment isn't necessarily indicative of where senators would've voted on Sen.

The post-9/11 AUMF has been interpreted broadly by U.S. presidents as allowing unlimited war-making powers against anything even loosely described as "terror." Sen. "They're unauthorized. We haven't voted on them, and I say, look, let's pay attention to some of the problems we have here at home".

The U.S. Senate has voted to table Sen. You can read his amendment HERE.

Trump announced last month a new strategy for the U.S.'s war in Afghanistan, one in which the USA would no longer focus on "nation-building", but simply "killing terrorists".

"No one with an ounce of intellectual honesty believes these authorizations allow current wars we fight in seven countries", he said.

Paul says inaction by Congress is letting the White House unilaterally commit the nation to war.

"Sen. Paul's amendment gives us that opportunity by saying the '01 and '02 authorizations need to end", Cardin said.

Sen. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., the leading Republican voice urging a new AUMF, warned of "the very risk associated with repealing such a vital law before we have something to replace it with". Paul is not alone in wanting to revisit the controversially expansive war powers resolutions to the National Defense Authorization Act, but he is the only legislator so far who has threatened to halt the $700 billion dollar act until his proposals for reform are addressed. The 2001 AUMF has already been used far beyond its original goal of authorizing force against those responsible for the 9/11 attacks. John McCain (R-AZ), were said to be concerned that new, specific AUMFs would limit to scope of America's wars, whereas the status quo is an AUMF that isn't directly applicable, and subsequently includes no direct limits that anyone is complying with.
