Updates from US Open final

Rafael Nadal

This is just the seventh time in the Open era that a grand slam final has been contested by a pair of players aged 30 and over and the first at the US Open since 2002 when Pete Sampras beat Andre Agassi.

The Spaniard is odds-on favourite to beat Anderson and win his first major title away from the French Open since the second of his titles in NY in 2013 and match Roger Federer by claiming two Grand Slams this season. "I don't know if the team hug is the right thing to do for the finals but I felt it was the appropriate thing to do", Anderson said.

Nadal's path to the final has only included one seeded opponent, 24th-seeded Juan Martin Del Potro in the semfinal. The top-seeded Spaniard faces 28-seed Kevin Anderson.

Trump sours on Cohn for Fed chair, looks at several candidates
Trump wants to fire him", said one source with close ties to the White House who spoke on condition of anonymity. Cohn, a former Goldman Sachs executive, may be able to fix his relationship with the president.

The somewhat unheralded 31 year old Anderson, ranked 32 in the world prior to the event, had only reached one Grand Slam quarter-final previously in his career, and it's very hard to rationalise quite how nervous he will be on the big stage against a seasoned campaigner who has been in Slam finals many times before.

He is the lowest-ranked men's finalist since the ATP rankings began in 1973, but is still being tipped by some tennis insiders as a dark horse from the get-go. Both players have met four times in the past, with Nadal winning all of those matches. He was able to be back and play his best tennis now in his career so I'm happy for him because I've known him since we were 12 years old. In their lone grand slam match at the 2015 Australian Open, the Spaniard won in straight sets.

Should this year's last major final end with anything but another piece of hardware in Nadal's hands, it will be one of the greatest sports upsets of 2017 so far. He prevailed at Flushing Meadows in 2010 and 2013, besides suffering a loss to Novak Djokovic in the 2014 final.
