Irma Sucking Tampa Bay and Ocean Around Naples Dry

The phenomenon was first seen this weekend in the Bahamas, when a resident posted a video on Twitter that depicted a beach with no water.

Hurricane Irma is creating such a stir that it is pulling water from the shorelines of some of the areas caught in the hurricane's crosshairs.

Hurricane Irma has been classed as the highest Category 5 storm with winds topping 195mph.

"I am in disbelief right now..." she wrote.

Basically, in the case of Irma, the power and the pressure have combined in such a way that the "bulge" effect is sucking the Atlantic ocean into its vortex.

The storm is so powerful that it has literally absorbed ocean water into its core enough that it dried out the ocean surrounding the Bahamas.

With Hurricane Irma just starting to create her path of destruction in the U.S., social media users have been left baffled after footage shows the ocean essentially "disappearing".

More than six million people in Florida, roughly 30 per cent of the population, have been told to evacuate.

It also sucked away ocean water from the shoreline at some beaches in the Bahamas. "And they don't know where it went!"

Footage from the Irma-hit Bahamas freaked out social media users on Saturday as it emerged that seawater was missing from a bay as far as the eye could see.

But, the water is still expected to come back with the storm surge.

Fortunately, Fritz explained the phenomenon isn't a sign of a tsunami, which pull water from the shore before crashing back into it.
