Trump sours on Cohn for Fed chair, looks at several candidates

Gary Cohn

President Donald Trump is unlikely to consider Gary Cohn, his top economic adviser, as the nominee for Federal Reserve chair, The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday.

Cohn, the National Economic Council director, was once a top contender for the powerful position, but his public rebuke of Trump's response to the violence at a Charlottesville white supremacist rally last month made him fall out of the President's good graces.

Cohn remains "focused on his responsibilities ... including a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to deliver meaningful tax reform that creates jobs and grows the economy, '"a White House spokesperson said".

The Journal reported the Trump, mulling a replacement for current Federal Reserve Board Chair Janet Yellen, soured on Cohn, who had emerged as an early favorite to lead the central bank.

Another administration official said Trump was "considering several candidates" for the Fed.

When Trump first blamed "both sides" for the violence in Charlottesville at a "Unite the Right" rally attended by white nationalists, Cohn stood silent.

He has put pen to paper on a two-year contract with Spurs , which could include the option of a third. The 32-year-old joined last summer and scored 15 goals , to save the club from relegation.

Yellen's term as Fed chairman ends in June 2018, giving Trump less than a year to decide whether to renominate her or pick someone else.

"He's not getting it. Trump wants to fire him", said one source with close ties to the White House who spoke on condition of anonymity.

A White House official cautioned that Mr. Cohn, a former Goldman Sachs executive, may be able to fix his relationship with the president.

As a member of the "Big Six", Cohn is one of two administration officials representing the administration in tax reform deliberations with congressional GOP leaders.

But he later admitted to the Financial Times that he was deeply troubled by Trump's remarks.
