Las Vegas among cities to vie for Amazon's second North America headquarters

Erie County Legislature Majority Leader Joseph Lorigo is urging Amazon to consider Erie County

Amazon has launched a $5bn (£3.8bn) search for a site for a new headquarters, asking cities across the USA and Canada to make their pitches.

Armed with $5 billion to spend, Amazon is searching for a "second headquarters" in North America, and is planning on hiring 50,000 full-time workers, the company announced on Thursday. The company plans to install the new base in a metro area with at least 1 million residents, at an urdan or suburban location where it can attract "strong technical talent".

Founder and CEO Jeff Bezos said the new headquarters will be "a full equal" to its Seattle counterpart with as many as 50,000 jobs.

Bezos and U.S. President Donald Trump aren't exactly fans of one another, and setting up a second headquarters with all the capabilities of the first just over the Canadian border could give Bezos additional political leverage. The company added that the new headquarters could be a downtown campus with a similar layout to the Seattle campus, an 8.1 million square foot area made up of 33 buildings.

The company, which is now soliciting bids for the project, said it would prefer to be located in a metropolitan area with a population of more than one million people, which would give it the potential to attract and retain talented workers.

Officials in the Baltimore metro area are also gearing up to pursue the possibility of landing Amazon's second headquarters.

Facebook had $100000 of political ads from Russian Federation in U.S. presidential campaign
Facebook has been under the microscope for months to explain how its platform was exploited during the last presidential campaign. Following the election, Facebook released a 13 page statement outlining strategies for fighting fake news on its platform.

A location in the Midwest could make sense for several reasons, said James Thomson, former head of Amazon Services who is now an e-commerce consultant.

The announcement of Amazon's second headquarters is a part of a larger effort from Amazon to grow its footprint at home and overseas.

The company now has its "Amazon HQ2 Request for Proposal" available on its website.

Local and state governments often provide generous tax incentives to lure large companies. Amazon intends to invest over $5 billion in the project and is now inviting proposals from municipalities.

Amazon is accepting proposals through October 19. These secondary items include things like an urban or downtown campus, similar layout to the Seattle campus, and a development-prepped site.

Amazon's Seattle office houses over 40,000, and numerous jobs for Amazon's second home will be new hires, according to Thursday's statement.
