North Korea hails successful test of nuclear bomb (From Lancashire Telegraph)

North Korea Reveals Shocking Images Of Possible H-Bomb Warhead

It was the North's sixth nuclear test since 2006, but the first since Mr Trump took office in January.

Japan said it had concluded there was a nuclear test.

North Korea is believed to have conducted a test after a magnitude 5.7 natural disaster was detected earlier Sunday.

The move is a direct challenge to US President Donald Trump, who hours earlier had talked by phone with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe about the "escalating" nuclear crisis in the region.

Kim Jong Un "set forth tasks to be fulfilled in the research into nukes", KCNA said, but it made no mention of plans for a sixth nuclear test. South Korea's President, Moon Jae-in, has called a meeting of his National Security Council.

"North Korea has again demonstrated its complete disregard for its obligations under United Nations Security Council resolutions, and for global norms against nuclear testing".

The precise strength of the underground nuclear explosion had yet to be determined.

In Seoul, President Moon Jae-In called for new United Nations sanctions to "completely isolate North Korea" and said the South would discuss deploying "the strongest strategic assets of the US military".

It also announced that the military has raised its alert status.

North Korea said it would make an important announcement at 0630 GMT (2pm Malaysia).

A second, smaller tremor was detected by the USGS and its Chinese counterpart.

But, as the votes polled in the booths of the slum clusters started coming into the picture, the AAP widened its margin. On Monday, the Congress led in the first seven rounds of counting, winning in the rural parts of the constituency.

In its report, KCNA (via Xinhua, China's official news agency) also said the North Korean leader "guided the work for nuclear weaponization on the spot", as part of "the final-stage research and development for perfecting the state nuclear force". North Korea conducted its fifth test last September.

In the aftermath of the provocation, the Donald Trump administration is expected to harden its line against the Kim Jong-un regime, faced with threats that it is now capable of striking the U.S. mainland with a nuclear-tipped missile.

"The test is dramatic, but not necessarily a game-changer".

"The power is 10 or 20 times or even more than previous ones", Said Kune Y. Suh, a nuclear engineering professor at Seoul National University.

The developments are raising already high tensions on the Korean Peninsula and in Washington that the North is getting closer to its goal of an arsenal of intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) that can reach the USA mainland. "Denuclearization is a long-term goal, not a short-term solution".

On Tuesday, the North fired a mid-range ballistic missile that flew over Japan, a test considered one of the most provocative ever from the reclusive state.

Melissa Hanham, of the Middlebury Institute for International Studies in California, said the images released by the North could not be proved real. "And the equations can to grip on things like depth or the geology of the area, and we don't know those kinds of facts", she said. Outside experts suggested the yield of the device tested Sunday might be in that ballpark, though closer to the lower range.

Independent nuclear experts told CNN that another test would likely be a way to increase the yield, or destructive power, of a weapon.

North Korea's latest claim on a hydrogen bomb could not be verified.

Thermonuclear weapons typically use a fission explosion to create a fusion reaction, which is far more powerful than a fission reaction.

"It now seems to have chose to end that restraint".
