Seventy-one percent say his behavior is not what they expect from a president, while 27 percent disagree.

However, an even larger number of voters - 62 percent - said they disapprove of Trump's corrosive and angry comments about reporters and their employers. Meanwhile, nine in 10 Democrats say they think Trump encouraged white supremacists with his comments and behavior - nearly two-thirds of Democrats say he did so intentionally.

Although Trump has called out groups like the Ku Klux Klan in prepared statements, his off-the-cuff remarks about how "good" and "fine" people were marching with white supremacists in Charlottesville may have served to embolden bigots. More than half of the people polled, 55 percent, said that there is too much prejudice in America today, while 40 percent said there is too much political correctness.

The rest of the poll didn't get much better for Trump: Twice as many said he's done more to divide the country than divide it, and six in 10 disapproved of his response to the Charlottesville protests and violence.

Further, the poll finds Trump's approval rating at 41 percent.

In an open question, 64 voters said "strong" was the first word that came to them when they thought of Trump, while 59 voters said "idiot", 58 answered "incompetent, 50 said "liar", and another 49 voters responded "president".

Fifty-six percent of registered voters said Trump has not been an effective president, while 39 percent said he had been.

A majority of Americans agree that President Trump could inadvertently engage the United States in an global conflict due to his rhetoric, according to a new survey released by the George Washington University Battleground Poll.
