Korea-US Military Drill to be at Similar Scale to previous year

JCS chief nominee says no plan to scale back Korea-US military drills

US forces will join military forces from major South Korean units representing all services, as well as South Korean government participants.

The exercise, called ULCHI Freedom Guardian, is set to begin on Monday.

Last week, North Korea said it was ready to send missiles towards the United States territory of Guam in the Pacific Ocean following comments from President Donald Trump that if Pyongyang made any more threats they would be met with "fire and fury like the world has never seen".

Earlier in the day, South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said that upcoming Ulchi Freedom Guardian exercise will be played out on a similar scale to that of a year ago, where 50,000 South Korean and 25,000 USA troops participated.

The Ulchi Freedom Guardian drill is a computer simulated defencive exercise created to enhance readiness, protect the region and maintain stability on the Korean peninsula, the Pentagon said.

"Approximately 15 CAF personnel, primarily from Canadian Joint Operations Command... will train alongside counterparts from the United States, the Republic of Korea, and other United Nations Command partners to strengthen defensive capabilities in the region", a spokesperson for the DND confirmed.

South Korea has no plans to reduce the scale of an annual joint military exercise with the USA or demand the withdrawal of U.S. troops stationed on the Korean Peninsula, the man set to become Seoul's chief of Joint Chiefs of Staff said on August 18. North Korea has termed the decision to hold the exercise a "catastrophe".

The war of words between Pyongyang and Washington had fuelled tensions in the past weeks.

North Korea has already released a statement regarding the announced exercise through the Central News Agency.
