US: Emergency declared as clashes erupt at hate rally

James Alex Fields, Jr., of OH, was later arrested and appeared in a Virginia court Monday. At least 19 of those victims are believed to be injured in the auto crash, according to the New York Times.

Fields rammed his Dodge Challenger into a group of protesters demonstrating against White supremacist groups in Charlottesville Saturday, killing a 32-year-old woman.

(Union, Ky.) - The attacker at the center of the violence at a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia on Saturday is a Boone County native.

Mr Fields, 20, has been charged with one count of second-degree murder, three counts of malicious wounding, and a hit and run. Originally from Kentucky, Fields, moved to OH and lived in Maumee, according to the New York Times Sunday.

The mother of the 32-year-old woman who died after a vehicle rammed into a crowd that was marching in Charlottesville, Virginia, on Saturday said her daughter was always defended her beliefs.

When he was just 13 and 14 years old, Fields was arrested and detained for spitting in his wheelchair-bound mom's face before intimidating her with a 12-inch knife.

Fields' mother, Samantha Bloom, told Associated Press that she knew her son was attending a rally - but did not realise it was organised by white supremacists.

As they waved Confederate flags and screamed racist, homophobic and anti-Semitic slurs, the protesters - nearly all white and male - were met with fierce resistance from activists who had come to stop them.

Following a long silence on the initial far-right rally, US President Donald Trump spoke out to condemn the "violence on many sides" after the clashes on Saturday.

"Justice will be delivered", said President Trump.
