11 killed by falling tree at Portugal religious festival

A tree which fell on worshippers at a Catholic festival in Madeira, Portugal has killed 12 people and left 50 injured, officials said.

A video shows the tree crashing down on a crowded square in a suburb of the main town, Funchal, spreading panic among people enjoying the festivities.

As a result of falling tree killed 11 people, 35 injured.

TV footage from the scene shows police and firefighters stood near the uprooted tree along with Red Cross workers.

The injured included citizens of France, Germany and Hungary.

Rui Nunes, the Red Cross president in Madeira, said: "It's visited by people from the island, holidaymakers, everyone who comes to Madeira".

According to local media, the collapsed tree was a 200-year-old oak tree. "My thoughts are with the relatives and friends of the victims". Maderia's government called for three days of mourning.

More televised images showed some people attended to the injured while others were visibly shaken.
