Some 25 people are dead and 65 injured, it was reported.

People gather at the site of a train collision near Egypt's Mediterranean city of Alexandria, on August 11, 2017.

By nightfall, cranes aided by floodlights began to remove the wreckage off the tracks to allow rail traffic to resume.

At least 31 people have been killed and 109 injured in a train crash in Egypt.

Deadly train accidents in Egypt are rare but not unheard of. Fifty-one people were killed, many of them children.

The stationary train had just arrived from Port Said, a Mediterranean city on the northern tip of the Suez Canal, when it was hit.

The statement did not say what caused the accident, only that the authority's experts would investigate.

State television showed dozens of people crowding around the damaged train cars, with bodies strewn on the ground.

The deadly incident reportedly took place in the Khorshid district on Alexandria's outskirts.

Both the transport minister and the head of the railway authority head were forced to resign as a result of that accident, which was blamed on a train signal operator who fell asleep on the job.

Abu Homs said the death toll was likely to rise further.
