Northwestern Professor And Oxford Employee Arrested In Stabbing Death Of Chicago Man

Police: Professor and British man wanted in murder detained

USA authorities have arrested a university professor and another man accused in the stabbing death of a Chicago hairstylist after a nationwide manhunt.

The U.S. Marshals Office said Wyndham Lathem-a 42-year-old associate professor of microbiology and immunology at Northwestern-turned himself in at a courthouse in Oakland. Warren has been suspended from his post as the senior treasury assistant at Somerville College, Britain's Oxford Mail reports.

Both men - taken into custody without incident - will appear before an Oakland court and are now awaiting extradition to IL, where they will be questioned by Chicago homicide detectives.

'I've never seen where suspects in a homicide would make a donation in the victim's name, ' said Lake Geneva police Lieutenant Edward Gritzner.

Wyndham Lathem and Andrew Warren were in custody in Oakland, a Chicago police spokesman said.

Mr Warren was arrested in San Francisco while Professor Lathem was arrested in Oakland, US Marshals inspector Ed Farrel told the Chicago Tribune.

Lathem has worked at Northwestern University since 2007 where he researches a type of bacteria that causes the bubonic plague.

Cornell-Duranleau - who had a certification in cosmetology and moved to Chicago in 2016 - was found with multiple stab wounds in Lathem's 10th-floor apartment in Chicago at around 8.30pm (3.30am BST) on 27 July.

He said: "We were not in contact with them directly".

Her backpack was found near the South Kaibab Trail, which the park official says has no water accessibility and nearly no shade. Schwartz said rangers advise hikers to hike in the morning or evening when temperatures are milder and there's more shade.

The Chicago Tribune reported Friday afternoon that Lathem sent a video to family members and friends in which he apologized for "his involvement" in the killing.

Chicago police had earlier identified the victim as Trenton Cornell, but have since said his full name was Trenton Cornell Duranleau.

Northwestern has placed Lathem on leave and banned him from university campuses.

The two were expected to appear in court and eventually be returned to Chicago.

Guglielmi said Warren and Lathem were caught on CCTV leaving the building that night.

Thames Valley Police spokeswoman Hannah Jones also confirmed that Mr Warren was reported missing on July 25 and investigations found he had left the United Kingdom on July 24, just three days before the alleged murder.

"There is no indication of any risk to the Northwestern community from this individual at this time", Cubbage added.

Cornell also issued the following statement to the AP: "Our Family is deeply saddened by the death of our son".

The family requested privacy as they "process and grieve".
