Britain's outspoken Prince Philip bows out of public life

Britain's Prince Philip to retire this week

He was also met with cheers as he was handed the Challenge baton.

Prince Philip is finally retiring from royal duties at age 96.

Wednesday's parade in Buckingham Palace's forecourt was Prince Philip's 22,219th solo engagement since 1953.

British tabloid The Sun made a similar error in May this year, publishing an obituary titled "Prince Philip dead at 95, how did the Duke of Edinburgh die, etc etc" when he announced his retirement from public engagements. He has also authored 14 books, has given 5,496 speeches, and served as patron to 785 organizations.

Buckingham Palace said the 91-year-old Queen's schedule will continue, and her husband may join her at official events, but "Team Windsor" - Prince William, his wife Catherine and Prince Harry - are increasingly stepping up their royal duties.

"It's an honour for the Armed Forces having the Duke of Edinburgh's last public engagement with the Corps and the Royal Navy - it's brilliant, we're delighted".

On this day, the moon will align perfectly between the sun and Earth, thus blocking the sun's light for the entire U.S. landscape. As the moon crosses between the earth and sun, the sun will appear to change shape as it will be partially blocked from our view.

In May, when one of his well-wishers expressed sadness at the duke's decision to "stand down", Philip jokingly said: "I can't stand up much longer".

He may, however, "still choose to attend certain public events from time to time", according to a statement from the Palace.

Although Prince Philip is in his late 90s, he remains in relatively good health, despite a few minor surgeries within the past few years and arthritis in his right hand developed from playing polo.

Philip's career as a royal consort has often been marked by gaffes and missteps, most notably when he told a group of British expats: "If you stay here much longer you'll all be slitty-eyed" while on a trip to China.

The newspaper revealed the Duke's body is first expected to be taken to the Chapel Royal at St James's Palace in London, where it will likely lie until the day of the funeral.

In typical fashion, Prince Philip offered a timely quip about his retirement following the news.
