Qatar Crisis: Restrictions To Continue, Saudi Arabia Says

Qatar FM arrives in Kuwait to give reply on demands

The Qatar government banned its citizens and residents from leaving the country, as the extended deadline to meet a list of demands set by several West Asians nations draws close, media reports said.

Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir, at a joint press conference, said that further steps against Qatar will be taken at the appropriate time in line with the global law.

A joint statement issued by foreign ministers of the Saudi-led bloc revealed that Qatar had rejected the demands previously sent to Doha by Arab countries.

"The four states which said that Qatar must be isolated, so to speak, now say 'We want Qatar to stop terrorist financing, that they do not offer terrorist protection, that they stop intervening in the region.' All other demands are no longer addressed", Gabriel said.

As The Two-Way reported, on June 22 the countries gave Qatar 10 days to comply with a list of demands including shutting down the Doha-based Al-Jazeera news network, severing ties with "terrorist organizations" and cutting ties with Iran. Mr Trump has backed the steps taken against Qatar, but over the past week has appeared to move more closely in line with his secretary of state, who has staked out a more neutral position. Erdo─čan said the same terms were presented to Saudi Arabia for Turkey to build a base in the kingdom, but Riyadh "wanted time to think it through".

A crisis in the Persian Gulf showed no sign of abating Wednesday, after four Arab states announced they will continue - and perhaps escalate - their isolation of neighboring Qatar, which they accuse of supporting terrorism.

Meanwhile, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has underlined his country's support for Qatar once again and expressed discontent with the demand for the closure of a Turkish military base in Doha.

Predictably the Saudi embassy in London categorically denied the claim but the accusation comes at a time when United Kingdom ministers are under public pressure to finalise their own report on UK-based Islamist groups, following a series of deadly bomb blasts carried out by religious extremists in the country. They also imposed an economic and transport blockade, which ended air links with Doha and closed the crossing at Qatar's only land border with Saudi Arabia.

Asked about the possibility of discontinuing Qatar's membership in the Gulf Cooperation Council, Sheikh Khalid said: "This is for the GCC to discuss".
