China's Xi: No tolerance for subversion in Hong Kong

They are followed by Hong Kong Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying, his wife Liang Tangqing, and Chief Executi

At midnight on June 30, 1997, after sampling a curry dish and a rum punch at the Regent Hotel, the main Chinese and British authorities attended the act that would forever change the course of Hong Kong.

Today, Xi will preside over the 20th-anniversary ceremony just a few meters from where the "Umbrella Movement" took place, and a speech will be given on which the future of the rebellious city is expected.

Lam was selected by a pro-China committee, as were her predecessors, and is already being cast by critics as a China stooge in a city where many are angry at Beijing's tightening grip on the freedoms of almost eight million people.

Saturday marks the 20th anniversary of Hong Kong, a former colony of Britain, being returned to China.

Recurrent in the images are the themes of nationalism versus colonialism, justice and freedom under Beijing's control, and the color red, a symbol of good fortune and Beijing support. Pro-democracy Hong Kongers like Mr Ng would like the city's people to be able to nominate their own candidate.

President Xi Jinping adopted a speak-softly-but-carry-a-big-stick approach yesterday, offering a chance for dissenters to be engaged but also warning that those who threatened national sovereignty would not be tolerated - and those who heard him took note.

And he appeared to put on notice a new wave of activists pushing for more autonomy or even independence, saying challenges to the power of China's central government and Hong Kong's leaders wouldn't be tolerated.

The financial markets of Hong Kong have become increasingly intertwined with the mainland through the years, with the launch of the Shenzhen Connect in December last year an example of ongoing developments.

"My priority will be to heal the divide and to ease the frustration - and to unite our society to move forward", Chief Executive-elect Carrie Lam said in March after her selection by a 1,200-person election committee stacked with Beijing loyalists. Xi did not make contact with the people in the street or with any pro-democracy voices, forgoing an opportunity to lower the political heat. They were demanding greater voting rights for Hong Kong, as well the immediate release of the Chinese dissident Liu Xiaobo.

Reports stated that the letter pledges that the USA will take back the weapons supplied once the joint operation is over. Mattis said the USA has made it clear all along that, "we're going to equip them for the fight.

Lam said she will "resolutely do everything" within her ability to implement the "one country, two systems" principle, uphold the Basic Law of the HKSAR and defend the rule of law.

Leaders including high-profile campaigner Joshua Wong were detained and bundled into police vans as their supporters shouted "shame".

In 2012, Xi's predecessor, Hu Jintao, made no mention of British invasion, or the 19th-century "humiliation", during his speech before Hong Kong's previous administration.

The abduction of several Hong Kong booksellers, who sold publications critical of China's leaders, by mainland agents has also shaken confidence in Beijing's promise of non-interference, they say.

The PLA is responsible for defending the city and comprises only mainland troops, with Hong Kong residents unable to serve, but it is barred from interfering in local affairs.

In response to the United States and United Kingdom statements, Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Lu Kang detailed Hong Kong's "comprehensive achievements with the support of the central government and mainland".

Jeffrey Wasserstrom, Chancellor's Professor of History at the University of California, Irvine, told TIME that such frank statements painted a "worrisome" picture for Hong Kong.

Lam has been in Hong Kong since ducking bail a year ago and revealing how he had been seized, blindfolded and detained for eight months without a lawyer.
