Queen s Speech for 2018 cancelled to deal with Brexit

MPs shout ‘Give us a clue’ as Speaker unable to give date for Queen’s Speech

After facing intense pressure to soften her Brexit plans since the election, May promised to consult widely.

The scaled-down ceremony is a result of the timing of the snap election.

For the first time in decades, a prime minister looks set to go into the event unsure of commanding the level of support among MPs needed to avoid defeat on a programme.

Talks between the Tories and the DUP have been underway since the election resulted in a hung parliament, and Downing Street even wrongly announced 10 days ago that agreement had been reached.

The address to Parliament usually mentions planned state visits, but this edition only contains a reference to welcoming King Felipe and Queen Letizia of Spain in July.

The government says the two-year parliament will give time to MPs to consider legislation needed for Brexit, starting with the Great Repeal Bill which converts existing European Union law into United Kingdom statute, and ensure a smooth transition.

"The UK will spend the next two years preparing for our departure from the European Union in a way that best places us to realise the opportunities ahead and build a fairer society".

All three members of the House whose names were reported by The Daily Caller are members of the conservative House Freedom Caucus. Sue Hodgkinson said she felt "horrible", saying, "I had no idea this was going to happen and I don't know what to say about it".

The newly installed leader of the House of Commons, prominent Brexiteer and former leadership contender for the Conservative Party Andrea Leadsom, said the two-year parliament was essential to pass what has come to be called the "Great Repeal Bill".

The Queen in the carriage leaving Buckingham Palace and arriving at the House of lords, where the software reads out the speech prepared by the government, which reported in detail about plans of the Prime Minister in the near future. "The fact is that over 80 per cent of the electorate backed the two major parties, both of whom campaigned on manifestos that said we should honour the democratic decision of the British people".

Mrs May said last year's referendum vote amounted to "a profound and justified expression that our country often does not work the way it should for millions of ordinary working families". Four militant attacks have questioned her grip on national security, and the death of at least 79 people in a tower block fire has become a flashpoint for public anger at her party's record in government.

Mrs May said: "This is a government with objective". Eight of 27 bills outlined in the speech deal with the complex Brexit process.

Liberal Democrat leader Tim Farron said: "This slimmed down Queen's Speech shows a Government on the edge".

The Queen's Speech will be cancelled next year, for only the second time in recent history.
