Trump administration order threatens quality apprenticeships for NC workers

President Donald Trump smiles during a Cabinet meeting Monday

President Trump will sign an executive order Thursday created to expand apprenticeships to train people for millions of unfilled jobs.

Critics have also pointed out that so far, the Trump administration has not committed to spending any more for apprenticeship programs than the $90 million spent by President Barack Obama, and that it is proposing to cut other government labor-market initiatives.

The White House said Trump's push is aimed at training workers with specific skills for particular jobs that employers say they can't fill at a time of low unemployment.

Earlier this year, Trump accepted a challenge to create 5 million new apprenticeships, according to the news outlet. The point here is to foster private-private partnerships between industry and educational institutions so that when students go to a community college, or when students are looking at apprenticeship programs in the building trades or in four-year institutions - when they leave, they have the skills necessary to enter the workforce.

One controversial aspect of the executive order is the fact that Trump does not require apprenticeship programs to be registered with the DOL, which now sets program parameters and certifies them to make sure they're in compliance and provide quality training and education.

"There is a little bit of uncertainty", about how the order will be put into effect, said Scott, the ranking Democrat on the House Education and the Workforce Committee.

The labor standards require sponsors of apprenticeship programs-typically employers, consortia of employers, or unions-to meet certain requirements.

President Donald Trump says he wants every high school in America to offer apprenticeship programs.

Franchise businesses have apprenticeship and workforce development programs in place and continue to work hard to address an emerging shortage of skilled workers. He used, as an example, the possibility of encouraging more apprenticeship programs to be twinned with people getting college degrees, citing the case of a former student who wanted to be a police officer but got a college degree without being qualified for it.

Finally, President Trump spoke at a campaign fundraiser for Governor Walker at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in downtown Milwaukee, which cost $1,000 to attend.

The NRA and many other companies and business organizations are all for that approach, since they say they have trouble filling jobs, particularly for high-tech positions. U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin said in a statement that Trump's "rhetoric doesn't match the reality of the budget cuts". Cantwell said, "This bill kicks American apprenticeship into high gear by establishing the first ever national incentive for apprentice programs". "The funding for apprenticeship programs should come from existing job-training funds, as well as from college aid".

Against this background, federally funded education and workforce development programs are not effectively serving American workers.

Trump also took a tour of the school that included a stop at a classroom filled with tool and die machines.

NPR reports that now there are more than 6 million jobs open in the US that could benefit from an apprenticeship, but only a mere 500,000 such apprenticeships now exist.

Wisconsin DPI Superintendent Tony Evers has called on Congress to reject Trump's proposal, saying it would hurt Wisconsin students.
