Sheriff David Clarke reverses acceptance of Homeland Security role

Sheriff Clarke Won't Take DHS Post

Sherriff David Clarke of Milwaukee, Wisconsin is now saying through representatives that he is rescinding his acceptance of an assistant secretary job with the Department of Homeland Security, which he announced exactly one month earlier.

Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke has withdrawn his name from consideration for a Homeland Security posting, according to a report Saturday. According to Peterson's statement, Clarke said he "is 100 percent committed" to Trump's success and that he "believes his skills could be better utilized to promote the President's agenda in a more aggressive role".

The Milwaukee County Sheriff reportedly rescinded his acceptance of the position, which he was slated to begin in June.

Homeland Security and the White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment. "And feel for my career staff".

Statement by Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis on Afghanistan Troop Levels
He said he hasn't made any decisions about sending more troops into the 16-year running war. However, Mattis also revealed that he hasn't yet decided whether to send in more troops.

Clarke, a vocal supporter of Trump during the 2016 campaign, is also a controversial figure.

It's not clear what Clarke will now do instead.

"The sheriff is reviewing options inside and outside of government", Peterson told the Post. Most recently, he has been under investigation in connection with the death of an inmate.

Trump nominated Clarke for a position at DHS in April, but within days, allegations surfaced that Clarke had plagiarized portions of his masters thesis at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California. It was never acknowledged by anyone in the Trump Administration or at the Department of Homeland Security prior to the time that the plagiarism charges became public, so it's unclear how accurate that claim ever actually was.
