The jury deliberating entertainer Bill Cosby's fate at his sexual assault trial will return on Saturday after yet another marathon 12-hour session on Friday failed to produce a unanimous verdict.
Prosecutors have vowed to try Bill Cosby again, declaring the woman who accuses the comedian of drugging and molesting her at his Philadelphia-area home in 2004 is "entitled to a verdict".
Cosby faced three counts of felony aggravated indecent assault during a 10-day trial in Norristown, Pa., stemming from allegations made by Andrea Constand, a former basketball manager for Cosby's alma mater, Temple University.
"We're going to retry the case", said Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin Steele.
For now, Cosby is free on bail.
But Cosby's reputation remains in tatters, following a slew of sexual assault allegations from about 60 women that have destroyed the "America's dad" image he built as star of the long-running 1980s TV comedy "The Cosby Show".
Prosecutors found themselves back to square one Saturday after the judge declared a mistrial following more than 52 hours of deliberations over six days.
They first informed Judge Steven O'Neill on Thursday that they were deadlocked, but were instructed to keep trying. "How do I describe the District Attorney?"
O'Neill said after the mistrial ruling that he would attempt to set the case to continue within the next 100 days.
Gloria Allred, an attorney representing more than 30 Cosby accusers, welcomed the prosecutors' decision to seek a retrial.
Celebrities took to social media Saturday to comment on the mistrial of Bill Cosby for sexual assault.
Constand's attorneys released a statement following the mistrial, thanking both the jury and the prosecutors in the case.
She also heaped scorn on media coverage of the accusations against her husband.
"It's way too early to celebrate, Mr. Cosby", she said, adding that "justice may be just around the corner".
Linda Kirkpatrick, one of the women accusing Cosby of sexual assault, told CNN shortly after the mistrial the entire ordeal had forced those accusing the star to relive a terrible time in their lives. "And the jury stuck to what they were asked to do and that is to review the evidence before them and there simply wasn't enough".
Constand herself sued Cosby in 2005 and settled for an undisclosed sum.
The trial drew intense media attention, with more than 100 credentials issued for print, online, television and radio reporters.
"Bill Cosby has already been exposed as a predator who hid behind his jovial mask for more than 50 years and no jury verdict will ever change that", she said.
Cosby himself did not address the small crowd - and his manner was far from the jokey one he had had interacting with supporters at the courthouse over the previous two weeks, when he would often repeat the "Hey, hey, hey" greeting that had become a catchphrase in his '70s animated series "Fat Albert".
"The defamation case is this clever way of saying, If I say you raped me and you say it didn't happen, then you're defaming me by calling me a liar", he said.
Cosby declined to testify and the defense spent just minutes presenting their case, calling one witness and arguing that the evidence just did not exist to convict their client.
