Alleged Alexandria Gunman Has Ties To Quad Cities

Law-enforcement officials named 66-year-old James T. Hodgkinson of Belleville, Illinois, as the suspect in the congressional baseball practice shooting on Wednesday morning, multiple outlets reported.

More recently, police responded to a "shots fired" call in Hodgkinson's hometown in March of this year.

Before the shooting, reports say that some of the Republican congressmen at the ballpark recalled a man asking some of them if they were Democrats or Republicans.

According to police reports, Hodgkinson has twice been involved in gun-related matters involving law enforcement.

Callers to 911 reported hearing roughly 50 shots in the area, about the same number of shots many said they heard in Wednesday's shooting.

Below are incident reports released by the St. Clair County Sheriff's Department related to Hodgkinson.

"I am sickened by this despicable act", the Vermont lawmaker said about the shooting.

On his Facebook page he labelled Clinton a "Republican Lite" and signed social media petitions from the liberal Change.org group attacking Trump. Sanders acknowledged Wednesday that Hodgkinson had apparently been among many volunteers on his 2016 campaign.

In the hours after the attack in Alexandria, Virginia, a picture began to emerge of an attacker with a mostly minor arrest record who worked as a home inspector and despised the Republican Party.

Court records reviewed and obtained by NBC News show that Hodgkinson was charged in 2006 with assaulting his girlfriend. Police recovered a shotgun from Hodgkinson following that arrest.

Hodgkinson lived in Rep. John Shimkus' district.

Darin LaHood and John Shimkus' offices said neither were at practice this morning.

Trump said he had spoken to Scalise's wife to offer his support, and to the chief of the Capitol Police, Matthew Verderosa, "to express our sympathies for his wounded officers and to express my admiration for their courage".

A witness described the shooter as a white man, dressed in a T-shirt and shorts.

At first, Katie Filous said she thought the noise was related to a pitching machine at the field before hearing screams from the people gathered at the field.

Texas Rep. Roger Williams, who coaches the GOP team, said that one of his aides, Zack Barth, was shot, but "is doing well and is expected to make a full recovery".

"They were screaming, 'It's a shooter!"

In a brief interview in a Senate hallway, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said, "I think everybody handled it well and things seem to be under control".

The FBI and Alexandria Police held a joint press conference today on the Congressional shooting.

Louisiana congressman Steve Scalise underwent surgery for a gunshot to the hip and was in stable condition.
