US beats Kiwis on opening day of America's Cup qualifiers

America's Cup press conference

Two-time defending champion Oracle Team USA came from behind to beat Emirates Team New Zealand for its second victory on the opening day of the America's Cup qualifiers on Bermuda's Great Sound on Saturday.

Aussie skipper Jimmy Spithill had Oracle seven seconds ahead at the first mark and 15 up by the second, steadily increased their advantage as the race progressed. Oracle and the five challengers will compete in two round robins, which will eliminate one challenger.

The victor will then face Oracle, who are racing in the preliminaries, but whose place in the final, due to start around the middle of June, is assured as the defending champions.

Oracle also made a fascinating call on their choice of equipment, using non-identical foils for the first time in America's Cup racing. If one of the finalists was also the victor the Louis Vuitton America's Cup Qualifiers, they will start with a one point bonus.

Land Rover BAR went 1-1 Saturday.

As BAR and Japan jockeyed for position before the start of the final race on Day One of the qualifying series, Japan skipper Dean Barker aggressively challenged his rival for inside running and counterpart Sir Ben Ainslie did not react quickly enough.

Team Japan tactician Chris Draper said there were "a couple of bruises" among SoftBank crew members and some compression damage to his boat's carbon fiber hull.

Either the headphone jack remains and has been moved to the top or has been killed, which is going to disappoint fans for sure. He has stated that the device will sport a fingerprint scanner at the front and will also come with 3.5mm headphone jack.

It was the third collision this spring for Ainslie, who sailed with Oracle in 2013 and is the most decorated sailor in Olympic history.

The British shore team has less than 24 hours to fix the boat before Sunday's races, when Land Rover BAR faces Oracle and Team New Zealand.

Only four countries, the United States, Australia, New Zealand and Switzerland, have won the cup since the schooner "America" first claimed it off the south coast of England in 1851.

The American team took almost 40 seconds out of their rivals on the third leg and showed far greater control of their AC50 boat in ideal sailing conditions.

"It's good to get back out there against them", said Spithill, an Australian.

Groupama Team France is led by Frenchman Franck Cammas.

Five of the boats employ arm power, but the Kiwis have opted for a revolutionary cycling system; the leg muscles are more powerful, but the position is less aerodynamic and grinders can not move around the boat as quickly. Rather than having grinders turn winches with traditional arm power, they installed four stationary bikes on each hull to have the grinders ride.
