Macron appears at event with Hollande amid preparations for transition to power

BRITAIN-POLITICS-VOTE

On May 7, Macron was elected French president, taking around 65 percent of the vote to Le Pen's 35 percent.

Two polls showed that En Marche would top the first round of the June election with 24-26 percent of the vote, ahead of the Republicans with 22 percent and the FN 21-22 percent.

Macron will name his prime minister next week, but could be forced to amend his choice if the legislative elections don't go to plan.

Europe and Germany would not simply suffer if Macron fails: they would benefit if he succeeds.
Some of Mr Macron's backers welcomed the move while others expressed hostility to Mr Valls and suggested that he might suffer the humiliation of being rejected as a candidate. But that is far from guaranteed.

A protest Monday in Paris against Macron's planned reforms drew several thousand people. "Macron: Not even started, already hated", it read. Announcing the changes, the movement's secretary general, Richard Ferrand, said the organization will be "a new political force" on the landscape redrawn by Macron's victory.

Le Pen says the 10.6 million votes she won on Sunday will make her party the leading opposition.

Memo alleges Donald Trump tried to shut down investigation
If Trump allies fail to paint Comey as a discredited figure, he could impose deep political damage on the President. Indian American Democratic Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi termed the revelations as "a serious breach of the law".

The National Front, meanwhile, is also gearing up for a name change - if not a makeover of its ideas - after Le Pen's decisive loss. In interviews on Monday her campaign director David Rachline said the party founded by her father would get a new name as bait to pull in a broader spectrum of supporters in France.

"Well aware that many voices have been raised in favor of the candidate of the National Front, the Chief Rabbi calls on all political leaders to take seriously the voters' cry of despair and anger in order to review their platforms and to regain the enthusiasm and support of the citizens", the statement by Korsia's office read. U.S. President Donald Trump called to congratulate Macron, while on the Kremlin website, Russian President Vladimir Putin urged Macron to "overcome mutual mistrust and unite to ensure worldwide stability and security".

Michael Roth, Germany's deputy foreign minister, applauded Macron's win but said the result was marred by the fact that 11 million people in France voted for Le Pen.

On the financial front, European stock markets edged down in early trading as investors had been widely expecting Macron's victory.

The euro, which had risen Sunday night in the wake of the news of Macron's victory, edged back down 0.5 percent to $1.0943.
