United Nations Security Council vows sanctions over North Korea's missile test

The UN Security Council has strongly condemned North Korea's latest ballistic missile test and vowed strong measures, including sanctions, to derail Pyongyang's nuclear weapons program.

The statement from the U.N.'s most powerful body said its 15 members agreed to "take further significant measures including sanctions, in line with the council's previously expressed determination".

North Korea test-launched what appears to be a long-range ballistic missile on Sunday, claiming that it can carry a "large nuclear warhead".

Japanese officials said Sunday that the missile flew for a half-hour and reached an unusually high altitude before landing in the Sea of Japan.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un was ecstatic with the test launch, saying Monday that if the US "dares opt for a military provocation" his nation is ready.

Despite North Korea's claim that Sunday's test simulated a re-entry situation, South Korean defense officials say the North probably has yet to master the technology.

But it said the North's missiles did appear to be able to leave and re-enter the atmosphere, which is crucial to developing intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs), the Yonhap news agency reported.

North Korean officials claim the recent launch is proof that the nation is capable of delivering a nuclear warhead that could possibly reach the US or its allies. The hauntingly successful missile test redeemed North Korea from its failed test earlier this year.

Tonight, watch SpaceX launch one of its heaviest satellites yet
In the future, such a heavy payload will likely be carried by the company's Falcon Heavy rocket, now in production. With the satellite launching into space, in-flight internet would be significantly improved.

KCNA said the missile was sacked at a high angle "in consideration of the security of neighboring countries", reaching a maximum altitude of more than 1,300 miles. Meanwhile, the United States has also urged China to use its influence over North Korea to de-escalate tensions.

U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is condemning the latest North Korean ballistic missile test as a violation of Security Council resolutions and a threat to peace and security in the region. It flew for 30 minutes - longer than any previous North Korean test.

North Korea is barred from ballistic missile technology under multiple Security Council resolutions.

"We consider that nuclear and missile tests are unacceptable", Putin said.

US began talks with North Korean ally China on possible new United Nations sanctions.

Nikki Haley, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, told ABC's "This Week" that "having a missile test is not the way to sit down with the president, because he's absolutely not going to do it".

"Russia doesn't want North Korea to have nuclear weapons, but the response from officials in Moscow has been minimal because they know Russian Federation isn't one of Pyongyang's targets", he added. Some analysts believe the missile, if proven in further tests, could reach Alaska and Hawaii if fired on a normal, instead of a lofted, trajectory. Let this latest provocation serve as a call for all nations to implement far stronger sanctions against North Korea.

The North has staunchly declared that it will not deter its missile and nuclear defense programs even as the United Nations Security Council has repeatedly called for it to do so.
