Tonight, watch SpaceX launch one of its heaviest satellites yet

SpaceX Falcon 9 set to carry Inmarsat-5 F4 satellite into space

The satellite was originally planned to launch April 30 on a Falcon Heavy rocket.

The satellite is meant to provide additional high-speed broadband capacity for users of London-based satellite communications firm Inmarsat's Global Xpress network.

As a result of the large payload it would be carrying, SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket on Monday's launch did not land its first stage after use. Another reason it is legless is due to the extreme weight, the Inmarsat satellite weighs more than 13,000 pounds and requires as much energy as the rocket can give to carry it into a geostationary transfer orbit.

Instead, the spent rocket will fall into the Atlantic Ocean, as numerous rocket boosters did before SpaceX and others like Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin led the charge toward reusable rockets.

For the May 15 launch, the weather forecast is an 80 percent chance of favorable conditions at the opening of the window, with the primary concern being cumulus and anvil clouds.

Spurs' Leonard expects to play in Game 6 despite ankle injury
Simmons fought over screens all night and was able to use his length a couple times to poke the ball away from Harden from behind. He had a chance at a potential tying 3-pointer in the final seconds of OT, but was blocked from behind by Manu Ginobili.

The satellite is the size of a double decker bus.

Falcon 9 is SpaceX's two-stage rocket.

In the future, such a heavy payload will likely be carried by the company's Falcon Heavy rocket, now in production.

The launch will come from historic Launch Complex 39A at NASA's Kennedy Space Center. That's because the satellite SpaceX is heaving into space tonight is supposed to hit a high orbit over 22,000 miles above Earth's surface, and that will take a lot of fuel, meaning there won't likely be enough left to also make a landing upon return. The 7th launch will happen 2 weeks from now at the beginning on June. With the satellite launching into space, in-flight internet would be significantly improved. It's the private company's 6th successful flight this year.

The Inmarsat-5 F4 satellite, built by Boeing, blasted off atop a Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral, Florida at 7:21 pm (2321 GMT). The launch has been to place the satellite into space alongside three of its peers.
