Upgrade the Surface Laptop to Windows 10 Pro for Free

Microsoft's (MSFT) newest laptop appears to be taking on not just Alphabet's (GOOGL) Google Chromebooks, as expected, but Apple's (AAPL) laptops as well.

Six years ago, Google debuted the bare-bones Chromebook product line running its own operating system instead of Windows. If the user want to download any third party app, then it prompts to download a similar app from Windows store.

While schools will definitely not ditch cheap Chromebooks for the $999 Surface Laptop, future computers with Windows 10 S will come with the same advantages and provide the same solutions for school settings that are offered by the Chrome OS.

Asus, Acer, Dell, Samsung, Toshiba and Fujitsu are creating Windows 10S devices which will launch "in coming months", with pricing starting at $189 (around £146).

If you buy a Windows 10 S device you will be able to pay to upgrade to Windows 10 Pro - this will enable you to run your PC like a normal Windows 10 machine. The company is offering one-year free subscription to "Minecraft: Education Edition" for its Windows 10 educations PCs.

During Microsoft's Surface event, the company unveiled Windows 10 S, Microsoft's answer to Chrome OS, a slimmed-down version of Windows capable of running on low-end hardware.

The new Surface Laptop is the first Surface device without a detachable keyboard. (MSFT) has introduced Surface Laptop, which is powered by Windows 10 S. Surface Laptop starts at $999 and will be available beginning on June 15th.

The new operating system variant is based on Windows 10 Pro and offers most of its features, bar being able to join domains on-premise, and reconfiguring the default web browser. According to Microsoft, it takes less than 5 seconds to start up a Windows 10 S when a user has already logged into it previously. The display is a 13.5-inch PixelSense panel with resolutions of 2256×1504 pixels. It can run for 14.5 hours on its batteries, thanks to the presence of the latest Intel core i5 and i7 processors on board. It runs on Intel's powerful Core i5 or Core i7 processors.
