Immigrants Plan May Day Rallies Buoyed by Trump Opposition

Police hold back traffic in Portland as people march through the streets

Marches are planned Monday in cities spanning from Santa Rosa to San Diego.

Police in Portland, Ore., shut down a protest that they said had become a riot after marchers began throwing smoke bombs and other items at officers.

Patricia Morales, a 50-year-old singer from Ventura, California, said she believes Trump only wants to oust immigrants in the country illegally who commit crimes. The bill, for which Eldridge is the Senate sponsor, would prevent state resources like local law enforcement from being used to enforce federal immigration law.

Nine people were also arrested in Olympia, the state capital in Washington, where protesters threw rocks, bottles and pepper-spray at police officers and broke the windows of downtown businesses, according to a Fox affiliate.

Labor unions and immigrant advocacy groups will lead May Day rallies in cities across the United States on Monday, with organizers expecting larger-than-usual turnouts to protest the immigration policies of President Donald Trump.

In Chicago, 28-year-old Brenda Burciaga was among thousands of people who marched through the streets to push back against the new administration. Given the widespread antipathy toward Trump anti-immigration policies, many predicted that this year's turnout may be bigger than ever around the world. Sadia Mohammed, a refugee said, "I worry that my children are being isolated from my heritage and my family".

Selvin Martinez, an immigrant from Honduras with an American flag draped around his shoulders, took the day off from his job waxing casino floors to protest.

May Day has roots as a spring festival in European pagan cultures, but it was dubbed International Workers' Day by socialist, anarchist and communist groups.

"If it just becomes something of entertainment or if it just becomes something of a political movement, it takes away from the fact that workers need to have their voices heard for the things that matter", said Cameron Kruger, Independent Drivers Guild.

Amazon will share part of its new headquarters with a homeless shelter
Homelessness is a huge problem in Seattle , where tent cities have sprung up under the interstates. Amazon's next office building in Seattle will include a homeless shelter, as it very well should.

But large crowds were expected this year as diverse groups united in opposition to Trump came together to support the marches. It later halted the weekly reports following sustained criticism from jurisdictions and immigration advocates who said the reports were an attempt to intimidate and shame so-called "sanctuary cities". "It is changing the way the U.S. is viewed around the world, as well as the way we're talking about and reacting to immigration within the country". At the White House gates, they demanded "Donald Trump has got to go!"

The city's plans for May Day included a set of demonstrations around the city, culminating with a rally downtown.

Union members typically march globally on May 1 in support of workers' rights.

In Philadelphia, 1,000 teachers, who've been working without a contract for years, protested outside schools.

Demonstrators gather during a May Day protest in New York, May 1, 2017.

Mr Trump, in his first 100 days, has intensified immigration enforcement, including executive orders for a wall along the US-Mexico border and a ban on travellers from six predominantly Muslim countries.

And late Monday, police in Portland, Oregon, and Seattle braced for the possibility of violence as far-left "anti-fascists" gathered to march, and Trump supporters and far-right activists prepared to counterprotest - a faceoff that has previously erupted in brawls in Berkeley, California, and Seattle. Activists have urged people to skip work, school and shopping to highlight the importance of immigrants in American communities.
