Alonso's McLaren gushes liquid in breakdown during practice

Alonso gives McLaren 6 months to fix failing F1 car

In that time he has travelled to America to visit the IndyCar paddock in Alabama and conduct his highly-publicised test at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, as well as contesting F1 race weekends in Bahrain, Russia and now Spain.

Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton of Britain steers his auto during the second free practice session for the Spanish Formula One Grand Prix at the Barcelona Catalunya racetrack in Montmelo, Spain, Friday, May 12, 2017.

McLaren's team radio told him to "stop the auto, stop the auto, engine problem" as a pool of liquid dripped from the underside of the vehicle.

The drip turned into a gushing pour of yellowish liquid when a crane lifted the McLaren away from the track.

Alonso and McLaren are having a wretched 2017.

"What can you do?"

"Yes, that is what is going to happen", said Alonso. "It was a pity for the fans that had come today to see me break down on the first lap".

"It wasn't humour to go outside the circuit to play tennis, it was preparation".

Alonso managed to do 21 laps in the second practice session in the afternoon, but he finished last.

After fierce war of words, Bouchard stuns Sharapova — Madrid Open
This intense match, in which every point was bitterly-and loudly-contested, reached its competitive peak early in the third set. In the end, the rust showed: Sharapova's game was there for stretches, and then it was gone, completely, for longer stretches.

"So, when I discovered that I had two hours free, instead of being on the sofa and watching television, I went for some training".

"If it is not the case then I will be more than happy to talk to anyone". But that is what Fridays are for. So now that I have not any more obligations with McLaren, I am happy with the team but we're not winning.

"I hope that the fact that we have been hit by pips since Friday will allow us to have a good race weekend", he said.

Champion in 2005 and 2006, Alonso hasn't added to his 32 victories since winning the Spanish GP in 2013. He had to abandon the Russian GP last round when his vehicle broke down on the formation lap.

"This is very hard, but it's even harder for McLaren, who have brought updates for the race and we haven't been able to try them", he said. He has struggled with inferior cars since, and his growing frustration has driven him to trading the endless twisting and turning of the labyrinth-like Monaco GP for a run at the Indianapolis 500 on an oval track later this month.

And despite two weeks to work on the auto, McLaren has made no progress.

Sporting a new funky nose to its Silver Arrows, Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas led both the morning and afternoon sessions.

Alonso's response was to a question asking if he would be willing to return to Ferrari, and Sebastian Vettel - sittting alongside Alonso in the press conference - suggested he would not veto such a move.

Pushed on whether he felt that there were any grounds to believe that Honda's situation was improving after increasing reliability trouble, Brown said: "I don't know that reliability is getting worse because we haven't had much reliability yet". The cars they look nice from the outside, with the big tires and everything.
