DHS to brief airline reps, lawmakers as laptop ban expansion is considered

US could expand electronics ban to all flights to Europe

Some U.S. airlines already have started making plans to comply with the ban that would prevent passengers traveling to the U.S. from using laptops and other large electronics in the cabin of the plane.

The ban on large electronic devices in airline cabins could expand to flights from the US to Europe, and travel industry organizations are speaking out on the change.

The electronics ban, which has been effective since March, has affected nine airlines on flights originating from Jordan, Qatar, Kuwait, Morocco, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Turkey. Britain hastily followed suit with restrictions on a slightly different set of routes. Government officials have been meeting with USA airlines on a almost weekly basis and intend to do so again later this week. "DHS continues to evaluate the threat environment and will make changes when necessary to keep air travelers safe", the agency said in a statement on Wednesday.

The ban - which prevents all electronics larger than a smartphone from being taken on a plane as a carry-on - now affects flights from several airports in the Middle East. The department told Fox News Monday that a final decision has not yet been made.

While the DHS said that it was merely considering such a move, European security officials told the publication that an announcement is just 24 hours away.

Colbert has good week in ratings despite controversy
Before The Late Show , and even before The Colbert Report, Stephen first got our attention as a correspondent on The Daily Show. Bee then entered, complete with enormous curly hair, in shock that Colbert was leaving in the middle of George W.

While several sources claim that the expansion of the large electronics ban is coming, there has been no official word on the change.

Royal Jordanian said in March that cellphones and medical devices were excluded from the ban.

Earlier Thursday, Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly met with senators from relevant oversight committees in a secure Capitol Hill facility to deliver a classified briefing to discuss numerous security issues "including threats to aviation", Lapan said. However, that is a temporary solution at best and the government and these airlines need to come to terms with each other to arrive at a more permanent one.

It is not known which (or how many) European countries an extended ban might apply to, but it would nearly certainly affect both United States and European carriers.
